Why Checkpoints Exist

The checkpoint system serves three critical purposes:

Safe Passage

Belt regions between protected zones contain Collapse-era contamination from damaged chemical facilities and environmental degradation. Between 2033-2041, over 2,400 people died attempting unauthorized crossings. Checkpoints provide verified safe routes preventing casualties.

Health Protection

Health screening at checkpoints prevents disease transmission between zones. Without screening, epidemics could spread rapidly across protected populations. Our health protocols have achieved 100% disease outbreak prevention since 2045.

Security Verification

Document verification ensures travelers are who they claim to be. Since 2042, we've prevented 127,000+ fraudulent crossings (forged documents, false identities, security threats). Professional verification protects all 137 million citizens.

How Checkpoints Work

The crossing process follows standardized procedures at all 47 facilities:

Step 1: Arrival & Document Submission

Travelers present Authority Travel Permit, government-issued identification, and health certification. Documents reviewed by trained inspectors.

Step 2: Biometric Verification

Advanced BioVerify Gen-4 systems scan fingerprints, photographs, and (when required) retinal patterns. Biometric data matched against Authority databases.

Step 3: Health Screening

Medical personnel conduct health assessments, temperature checks, and contamination screening. Ensures travelers are not carrying communicable diseases or Belt contaminants.

Step 4: Security Assessment

Background verification checks criminal history, security flags, and authorization legitimacy. Professional inspectors make final determination.

Step 5: Approval or Denial

Approved travelers proceed to destination zone. Denied travelers receive explanation and appeal information.

Checkpoint Safety Record

Since checkpoint network establishment in 2042:

"Without the checkpoint system, Belt crossing casualties would have continued at 2033-2041 rates. Our network has prevented an estimated 14,000 deaths over 15 years by providing safe, regulated passage."

— Director General Marcus Thorne, 2057 Annual Report
